Modern Family

I’d get these YouTube shorts of random clips from Modern Family, which eventually got me interested in watching it. I started the show a few weeks ago and I’ve gotten to season 5 (at the time of writing this), and I can’t believe I missed out on this show for 11 years. I did hear the show goes downhill after this season but this post is mainly about what I have seen so far.
I so badly want to root for Mitch and Cam; when they aren’t fighting, they’re sweet. Their proposal episode for example, was such a great episode for them, but every episode it feels like a reset button is pushed on them. They argue over the littlest things and it’s usually Cam that’s instigating. Mitch always has to walk on eggshells around him. On the contrary, I think Jay and Gloria might have the healthiest(?) relationship on the show, and I never expected to like them as much as I did.
All three Dunphy siblings grew on me a lot, especially Haley. However I really wish the writers didn’t go the direction of kicking her out of college, I think having her be in college would’ve been such a big step for her in terms of growth, and her being kicked out sorta ruined that (four episodes after she moves into her dorm nonetheless). That being said though, she’s still noticeably gotten a lot more mature and responsible, and I’m glad the writers still made that happen.
My favorite episode currently is The Old Wagon, it’s such a sentimental/family centered episode that really hits home. Time flies, and before you know it, life gets in the way and you don’t see your family as often as you did before, which is probably why this episode resonates so much with me. I’d only known this family for a season at that point and I still felt nostalgic on behalf of Phil and Claire.
I’ll probably update this post with more thoughts once I finish the show. I’m nervous for season 6 and beyond, but hopefully it doesn’t go too downhill.
